There are many stories about how the beautiful Bahamian Island, named Cat Island, received its illustrious name. There is some level of lore that Cat Island was a reference to the large number of feral cats that made the 48 square miles of tropical forests, cays, and beaches their home, before they were driven off. Then there are legends of a pirate, Arthur Catt, who made the island his base, from where he could sail the West Indies freely. Whatever the true story may turn out to be, there is no denying that the myth and legends only add to the mystery and intrigue of the island.

Greenwood Beach Resort sits on the tiny Cat Island of the Bahamas, staring out into the Atlantic Ocean so that every clear night, the moon hangs over the empty waters in a sight bewitching to the mind and soul. Every morning, you will be able to step out and watch the sunrise over that same water, in a startling clear and beautiful manner. That is only the appetizer, however, to the wonders that you can experience upon the mysteriously named island.

At Greenwood Beach Resort, you can relax in one of the 16 intimate and comfortable living rooms available, half facing the ocean to receive the cool sea breeze and half having AC for those of us that like things a bit more frigid on occasion. There are two restaurants on site, as well as a bar and a swimming pool for those days you want to wile away the hours. The entire resort is full of life and color, a great way to spend a day or two in utter relaxation. Afterwards, you can journey out of the resort, upon boat, on foot, or in a car and explore. Arthur’s Town offers wonderful restaurants, plus you can explore the miles and miles of the island’s hiking and nature trail.

Of course, there is no exploring the Bahamas without taking a step off the sand and soil and into the water. You can kiteboard and snorkel right off the resort itself, but if you truly want to experience Cat Island’s wonders, the best way to do that is by the water. Cat Island sits on the edge of the continental shelf, and you can travel out to where the drop point is and stare off the edge of the New World. Two of the more famous spots to dive, both of which are available with Greenwood Beach Resort, are Columbus Point and the Devil’s Point. Aside from those two spots, there are approximately 20 other sites off the southern point of the island that Greenwood Beach Resort offers as part of their dive packages.
