1. Pescador, The Name

The name ‘Pescador Island’ comes from the Spanish meaning of Pescador, which is translated to fisherman. Even all those years ago it was known to have an abundance of fish living around its shores, of course, this attracted fishermen. People often think today it gets its name from the huge school of sardines that resided on Pescador Island however, this is a more recent event.

No one lives on Pescador Island, years ago there would have been someone to maintain the lighthouse but now it’s all automated. There is however a population of cats that somehow manage to survive. Over the years there have been attempts to build varies houses but, all have failed leading the locals to believe its haunted. 

3. Geography

Located a few kilometers off the west coast of Moalboal Pescador Island is surrounded by deep oceans. It is essentially an ancient sea mound which grew tall enough to rise above the sea level. Encrusted with live and dead corals you can see lots of fossils above the water line from when the oceans where much higher.

Pescador Island is said to be the best dive site in Moalboal and one of the best dive sites in the Philippines. It is the most visited dive site in Moalboal if you want to go there when it's not so busy just ask the dive guides at Magic Island Dive Resort and they will take care of the rest. Maybe a name change to ‘Buzo’ Island is in order.

Its shallow ledge which is filled with corals and reef fish makes a perfect place for snorkelers to view the magnificent underwater world.
