“There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy”. This line, written by the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, was penned to express the idea that human knowledge is limited, that we will, as a species, never learn everything that there is to possibly know. One of the easiest ways to learn just how true this is, is to take some time to explore the waters beneath the Anilao region of the Philippines. This region of the vast oceans is full of life, all of it beautiful and strange in their own ways.

When you dive deep into a region of the ocean like this, there are some things that you expect to see, just because of what you’ve seen before, growing up in this modern age, but that is only a small little section of the exotic organisms that call Earth home, and while sometimes you might have an idea of a creature, the ability to see it up close and personal, in the case of whale sharks, for example, no picture, no video, can do this creature justice. Diving with whale sharks gives you a sense of the real scale of these mighty creatures, who feed off of some of the smallest possible critters to survive. You will feel like a child all over again as it glides through the water above you, or as you watch from the topside on a whale watching boat.

That’s not to say that you can only be awed by the sheer scope of size, color, shape, and vibrancy all have a place in the waters off this area of the Philippines, from the smallest species of shrimp and crustaceans, to the frilled appearances of scorpionfish, octopi, and other varieties of marine animals. Cuttlefish flash brilliant patterns of colors and blend in seamlessly into the backdrop, while you roll over fields of coral reefs watching the world float by. A complete view of what another world could be like. And after a relaxing day at one of the region's featured stays Aiyanar Beach and Dive Resort, you can sneak out after dark to experience one of the true pleasures of Anilao, night diving. If you thought the colors were electrifying and the undersea world was strange during the day, night under the waves in the region changes things completely, flipping the dial up to eleven.

There are creatures in the region that are unique to every level of light, from daytime, to dusk and dawn, to the dead of night. And it is during the night that the flashing colors and undersea dances are brought to the fore, and it's like watching the sky in motion right in front of your face, stars flashing and twisting and falling and rushing this way and that all against an inky black backdrop.
