Resort Report: Waidroka Bay Surf & Dive Resort
A vacation at Waidroka Bay is a chance for world-class diving. But that's just the beginning. What sets this Fiji favorite apart from many other dive resorts is the roster of additional activities that can be enjoyed on water and land.
Waidroka Resort's oceanfront setting and lush landscaping evoke a sense of relaxation.
Waidroka is located on the southern shore of Viti Levu Island, which is one of Fiji's favorite vacation destinations. This region of coastal coves, pristine beaches and rainforest-clad hills is known as the Coral Coast. The name comes from the expansive network of barrier reefs that lie just offshore. The location is ideal, as it puts Waidroka guests at the center of the region's best diving and water sports, along with a full roster of land-based attractions and activities.
Waidroka offers three accommodation choices, with five ocean-view rooms set on a hillside above the resort. Five oceanfront Fijian-style bures and a pair of two-room oceanfront bures designed for families and small groups traveling together.
Guests enjoy a private, tranquil setting away from the crowds, as the property is made up of just 12 rooms set on 11 acres of rainforest and landscaped oceanfront gardens. The resort's modest size allows the Waidroka staff to focus on providing high levels of personal service to deliver what they describe as a home-away-from-home experience with a focus on relaxation and wellness.
Mealtimes at Waidroka become social events. The on-site restaurant serves a la carte breakfast and lunch menus and a variety of three-course dinners that feature a range of fresh local ingredients.
A Diversity of Underwater Experiences
Great diving begins just minutes from Waidroka's dock. The shoreline is flanked by an extensive labyrinth of hard coral formations that includes high-profile bommies, coral mazes, arches, grottoes, and walls. Marine life is equally abundant in all sizes from colorful anemones and cryptic invertebrates to turtles, eagle rays and up to ten species of sharks.
Waidroka's local dive sites could keep divers entertained for a full week, but they are just the beginning. The resort's fleet also makes regular runs to Beqa Lagoon, which lies some 8 miles to the south. This destination is the site of an adventure that has been called the world's best shark dive. At the sites known as Arena and The Cathedral, thrilling encounters put divers face-to-face with big bull and tiger sharks, along with a swarming menagerie of gray reef sharks, silver tips, lemon sharks white tip and black tip sharks, giant groupers, napoleon wrasse and more.
Fiji's Coral Coast rewards divers with healthy coral reefs and an intriguing range of underwater landscapes.
Guests at Waidroka get more than sharks from Beqa Island trips, as boats typically offer a full-day itinerary that allows for additional dives on the massive ring of coral that surrounds the lagoon or at nearby Yanuca Island. In all, Beqa offers some 180 miles of reef lines with sites to discover both inside the lagoon and outside, where slopes and walls face blue water.
Additional unique diving experiences await with trips to dives sites at Frigate's Passage for exhilarating drift dives and descents on big walls adorned with giant gorgonian fans and stands of black coral. Waidroka boats also visit a less-dove deep-water pinnacle known as Cakau Lekaleka. This coral-studded oasis in the ocean attracts large schools of fish and up to ten species of sharks.
Beqa Lagoon is world-renowned for exciting encounters with big sharks. Bulls and tigers are often the stars of the show, and they are often joined by a half-dozen different species of sharks.
Not Your Average Surface Interval
Waidroka has a refreshing swimming pool and hammocks where you can relax after diving. But there's so much more to do. The range of water and land activities offered is truly impressive. The resort is a favorite with experienced surfers who come to ride the swells at Frigates Passage. It's also a good place for newbies to learn to catch a wave at sites like Natadola Beach. The resort provides complimentary kayaks and paddle boards to explore the shore. Families with non-divers can enjoy snorkeling, take a jet ski safari or go deep sea fishing.
In addition to diving, guests at Waidroka enjoy a wide range of activities from wellness programs to unique adventures.
Come ashore and the options multiply. Mellow out at the resort with yoga sessions, spa days and a Fijian massage, or expand your cultural horizons with local language lessons, weaving classes and coconut harvests. If that all sounds a bit tame, you can take on some white water rafting through the Navua Gorge, ride a jet boat up the Sigatoka River or delve into the shadows of Naihehe Cave. Adrenaline junkies can go sky diving, offroading, sand dune surfing and ziplining, while milder yet equally memorable excursions include waterfall visits, highland treks, visits to traditional villages, kava ceremonies, golf outings, island tours and shopping trips to local markets.
The Navu River Gorge provides unique opportunities for rafting adventures.
There are few other destinations in the world that offer the exceptional level of diving found at Waidroka combined with an impressive roster of life-list adventures. Add in the relaxation and warm family-like atmosphere the resort is known for, and it adds up to one great vacation experience.
