St. Eustatius Information

St. Eustatius' maritime history is revealed to divers who search for remains of more than 200 historic shipwrecks scattered across the seabed. Nicknamed the Golden Rock, and often called Statia, it was once the busiest port in the Caribbean. An all-encompassing marine park protects diverse underwater landscapes from shallow reefs and critter-covered sands to boulder labyrinths and deep walls. The historic wrecks, now little more than debris piles, become prime hunting grounds for macro life that find shelter in debris fields that contain an eclectic mix of antique glass, porcelain goods, ballast stones, cannons, and anchors. The park also contains seven modern wrecks, including the 320-foot Charles L. Brown. Ashore, Statia is a relaxed, off-the-path destination that has never seen a cruise ship or a beachfront condominium.
