This remote outpost of the South Pacific was the site of one of the most ferocious battles of World War II, namely the Battle of Guadalcanal, but dive beneath the ocean surface and you will find an underwater environment as pristine and untouched as anywhere on earth. Most of the wrecks are beyond the reach of recreational divers but a few are accessible while the majority of dives take place along soft-coral covered walls and “bommies,” fissured pinnacles and caverns with marine life ranging from rare macro critters to impressive pelagics such as sharks, mantas, dolphins and huge schools of barracuda. The widest range of sites can be reached by live-aboard but a pre- or post-tour will allow visitors to experience some of the islands natural, cultural and historic sites.
